It's almost Independence Day! I am thankful for the 4-day weekend, however I am not thankful for all of the temptation that will be surrounding me. Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, you name it. Fortunately, on my diet plan, I don't have to stay away from those foods completely, but I do have to limit the amount I eat.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout a holiday weekend is very difficult, especially when you're barely into your journey. However, I know I am strong enough to resist temptation and keep my indulgences to a minimum.
Telling yourself you can't have something makes you want it even more. While I applaud those of you who can limit entire food groups and all processed foods from your diet, that's just not me. I can't go to a cookout and just eat fruit and vegetables, and frankly, I think forcing myself to do that would be a crime.
Everyday, not just holidays, I am surrounded by deliciousness. From the birthday cake at work to the wine in my fridge, I am forced to make a conscious decision not to go overboard. I know myself, and I know if I have too much of something, I am going to want it all the time.
As I have said before and will say again, you have to do what works for you. If you can have a cheat day when going to your friend's cookout, eat anything you want, and jump right back on the healthy train the next day, bless you child! I wish I had the willpower to do that, but I don't, and possibly never will.
What works for me is not looking at foods as "bad," but rather looking at eating too much of any fattening food as something that will hinder my success. As long as I keep my calories and workouts in check this weekend, I know I will be fine. Hey, I might even lose a pound or two!
Good luck, and happy Fourth of July!
